WELCOME TO CASALETTO SPARTANO

In lower Cilento, a stone’s throw from the sea and the mountains lies Casaletto Spartano.
A town steeped in history, traditions and rare natural beauty.

Between legend and reality

… as with many towns in southern Italy during the Middle Ages, the birth of a settlement often occurred in a “spontaneous” manner, starting with an aggregation of a few dwellings that gradually increased until it reached the identity of a village, in the same way it seems to have happened with Casaletto Spartano. According to a local legend, the first nucleus developed near an ancient village called “Spartoso,” of which some ruins are still visible today; this is where the name Spartano is said to derive from. The abandonment of the old nucleus, again according to this ancient legend, was caused by an ant invasion (ants destroying settlements are present in many legends of founding villages, not only in Cilento: it is a metaphorical image representing the invasion of a very large enemy population).
More likely, the first nucleus of the town arose at the foot of
Mount Valicorvo because the place was rich in water, there being numerous springs in the area and especially the river…

CAPELLI DI VENERE

A magical oasis, where time seems to stand still to admire the beauty of the most unspoiled nature.

Endless rivulets of threadlike water leap from the overhanging Sorgitore, graze the Medieval Bridge and plunge into the Rio Casaletto.
This is how the Capelli di Venere (Venus’s Hair) waterfall, flagship of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, is born.
The enchanting waterfall takes its name from the maidenhair plant, a perennial fern that grows mainly on the sheer walls at the edges of the waterfall and along the banks of the river.
The waterfall is also linked to an ancient legend set in the time of heroes and gods, which tells of a unique and visceral love making this place an even more fascinating place.
