Living in a fairytale…

It is really only a few steps from the road to the waterfall. At the entrance to the ‘oasis, one notices the high variety of flora.
On the right there is a heather type of vegetation (lives with little water) and a hydrophilic one (needs water). We find willow, Neapolitan alder, and Judas tree.
On the rock face we can see a stratification of the rocks themselves. This is of particular importance for the formation of waterfalls. When it rains, water flows through these cracks and is enriched with calcium.
The peculiarity of the waterfalls is not the beauty itself but its unusual formation: the calcium-rich water in contact with air undergoes a chemical transformation that results in the deposition of calcium. The water, in fact, passing through the moss is filtered, and the limestone is deposited as the water flows.
The moss rich in limestone calcifies on the inside becoming stone: travertine, which is the base of the falls. This results in a continuous transformation of the falls themselves.

A walk between nature and legend

Although the name of the falls is associated with the plant, there is a “legend” that is lost in the mists of time and tells of a unique and visceral love that makes this place an even more fascinating place. It is said that at the time of the heroes and gods, Venus decided to go to the vicinity of Casaletto, to find in this oasis peace, tranquility and refreshment from the heat. She loved the place so much that she even made it her paradise. From there one day a young shepherd passed by with his small flock, the man noticed her, hearing her voice and admiring her extraordinary beauty he was thunderstruck, he fell madly in love with the goddess so much that he hid near the grove to spy on her. Of her he loved her suave voice, her bewitching eyes, but most of all her soft, long, blond hair. Obsessed with her he decided to cut off a lock of it while she slept, but Venus woke up in a daze and furious at that cowardly act turned that lock into water, which immediately slipped from the man’s hands enough to drown him in a short time.
But Venus, who was not an evil goddess and hearing the desperate cries of that young man became tender, but it was now too late to save him. She understood the bitter deed done by her lover and decided to turn the man into a plant and left him beside the rivulet of water that turned into a waterfall, “The Cascades of Venus’ Hair,” born of his hair and the love of a young shepherd for a goddess. From then on he and Venus would be together forever.
